To prepare for the brit,
please obtain the following:

  • One bottle infant Tylenol®
  • Two boxes sterile gauze pads, 25 each, 3×3 preferred
  • Two ounces antibiotic ointment, name brand or generic
  • Two disposable diapers and wipes
  • One bed pillow, standard size
  • One bottle sweet, red, kosher grape wine at room temperature
  • One kiddush cup or wine goblet
  • Kipot (yarmulkes) for your guests
  • Table, waist high

Before the Brit:

Stop feeding, breast or bottle, approximately one hour prior to the scheduled time of the brit and give the baby a dose of infant Tylenol® at .4 on the dropper. The baby can be fed immediately after the brit.

After the Brit:

Infant Tylenol® (.4 on the dropper) may be given every four hours throughout the first 16-hour period, if needed. Check with your child's pediatrician for any contraindications.

Swelling may occur. This is normal. You may notice a thickness on the underside of the penis where the skin is bunched together. Over time this will disappear.

Apply a sterile gauze pad with antibiotic ointment to the area and change whenever changing the diaper for three days after the brit. The day of the brit is considered the first day. After this time the baby can be fully bathed if the stump of the umbilical cord has fallen off. If not, a sponge bath is appropriate.

A whitish-yellow formation (granulation) of tissue in the area of the wound will occur in some babies. This is a normal part of the healing process.

Care should be taken to observe the area during the healing process to insure that the crown of the penis remains fully revealed. Should this not appear to be the case, please consult Cantor Kushner immediately.

If for any reason you have questions or concerns during the after care period, do not hesitate to contact Cantor Kushner.
